Hail Damage Repair in Odessa: What to Expect
How a hail claim goes at a West Texas body shop, from counting dents on the roof to paintless repair, conventional repair, and when a panel gets replaced.
A hail storm rolls through Ector County in twenty minutes and leaves a roof, a hood and a trunk lid full of dimples. The next morning half of Odessa is standing in driveways counting dents. Here is what actually happens once the vehicle comes to the shop, and what decisions get made along the way.
Step one: the count
Hail repair is priced on the number, size and location of the dents, so the first thing we do is count. The vehicle goes under good light, usually a fluorescent tube reflection or a lined board that shows every ripple in the panel, and we work panel by panel: roof, hood, trunk lid, both sides. Dents get sorted by size, roughly dime, nickel, quarter and half-dollar, and by whether the paint is broken.
That count is the estimate. Insurance companies use the same method, so when the adjuster looks at it we are comparing like with like. If the storm was big, carriers sometimes set up catastrophe teams in the area and write estimates in bulk; bring us that paperwork and we will work from it.
Paintless dent repair, when it works
If the paint is not cracked and the dent is not on a sharp body line, the dent can usually be worked out from behind the panel with rods and tabs, without any filler or paint. This is paintless dent repair. It keeps your factory paint intact, which is the best possible outcome, and it is faster than a conventional repair.
One of our customers once counted hundreds of little dents on her car after a storm, and we got every one of them out. That is a normal hail job, not an unusual one.
When the panel needs conventional repair
Paintless repair has limits:
- Dents on a body line, edge or crease, where there is no room to work behind the metal.
- Dents where the paint has cracked or chipped, since the paint has to be refinished anyway.
- Panels with so many hits that the metal is stretched and will not settle back.
- Aluminum panels on some newer trucks, which are harder to work.
In those cases the panel gets a conventional repair: metal work, filler where needed, primer, and paint matched from your VIN's paint code and blended into the neighboring panels so there is no visible edge.
When a panel gets replaced
A roof skin with a few hundred hits, or a hood that looks like a golf ball, may be cheaper and better to replace than to repair. A replacement roof is a bigger job than it sounds, since the glass and headliner come out, so it is something we talk through with you and the adjuster before anything gets ordered.
What the insurance side looks like
Hail is a comprehensive claim, not a collision claim. That matters for two reasons. It usually carries a different deductible than your collision coverage, and it is generally not treated as an at-fault event. We handle the claim with your carrier the same way we handle a wreck: you give us the claim number, we send the estimate, and any additional damage found once the trim comes off goes back as a supplement.
A hail claim is often small enough that your deductible eats a real share of it. If the dent count is low, ask us whether it is worth filing. We will tell you honestly. There is more on that in claim or pay out of pocket.
Do not let it sit
A dent that has not broken the paint is stable and can wait a while. A dent that has cracked the paint is a different story. West Texas sun and the occasional rain get into that crack, and a chip becomes a rust bloom under the clear coat. If you see broken paint, get it looked at sooner rather than later.
Also, watch out for the pop-up hail repair tents that appear in parking lots after a big storm. Some are legitimate traveling technicians. Some are gone in two weeks with your deductible. How long does hail repair take?
It depends entirely on the count and the mix of paintless versus conventional work. A light hit might be a couple of days. A heavy one with a roof replacement is longer. We give you a real date once we have counted.
Will paintless dent repair damage my paint?
Done properly, no. The point of it is that the factory paint never gets touched. If a dent cannot be worked without cracking the paint, we tell you and treat it as a conventional repair instead.
Does hail repair go on my vehicle's history?
An insurance claim generally gets reported. The repair itself, if paintless, leaves no filler and no repaint, which is as clean as a repair can be.
